Anyone who knows me well knows how much I love Diet Coke (especially with lime).
I love the burn in the back of my throat, the fizzy carbonation, the crisp, refreshing taste...and I'd order it with everything and even drink it for breakfast (which I know is totally ghetto, but in lieu of coffee, it did the trick).
Over the years, countless friends and loved ones have warned me about the dangers of aspartame, the chemical that makes D.C. so delicious and calorie-free. Of course, I always poo-pooed whatever people had to say because I couldn't imagine actually giving it up.
I definitely appreciated the concern but sort of lived with the "well, life is too short not to enjoy Diet Coke" approach.
But then I read some more sobering research online from a slew of respected doctors, and I finally decided to give detox a try on my own terms. While the first couple of days definitely weren't easy, (I even dreamt of Diet Coke...sad I know) it's now, slowly but surely, becoming second nature to swap a bottled water (or the occasional Pellegrino) for a D.C.
I even drank water with my burrito bowl from Chipotle, which I never thought was possible. I mean Tex-Mex and D.C. just go together, right?
One month down. Many, many more to go...here's hoping I can stay the course. Thanks to everyone who's been checking in with me. Your encouragement is mucho appreciated.
I am so proud of you! I think I may have been one those friends over the years who warned you about the dangers of the dreaded aspartame. Now, if I can just get off of the Shiraz! Nah...

You were definitely one of my friends who warned me of the evils of aspertame. :) I'm glad to be off the stuff, that's for sure, it just took a while.

I am on day two of no drinking any sodas...mainly Mr Pibb and Pepsi.
How are you doing now? I hope to make this a permanent thing. (with a few exceptions, maybe).
I am proud of you for trying!
And I have never liked diet anything!
Oh, and my ex drinks a stevia based soft drink, which might be a better choice. "Zevia". http://www.zevia.com/

Great to hear that you're taking the plunge too, Stan! Still doing great on keeping my life relatively Diet Coke free. I think enjoying something in moderation is never bad, but I never want to get back on the DC bandwagon.
As for Mexican food, I drink Pellegrino w/a lime now...and really like the fizz with Mexican food.
